How to Scan and Pay In Store With Venmo: Tutorials
Many stores allow you to pay easily with your Venmo app. You can check out your item with your choice of Venmo payment method.
Choose between paying with your Venmo balance, linked bank account, debit card, or credit card.
To Pay in-store by scanning the Venmo QR code in these simple steps:
- Open Venmo App
- Select the QR code-like icon on the top right of your app, leading you to the in-app scanner.
- Hover your camera on the store’s QR code to scan.
- Confirm purchase in the app with your selected payment method.
Do note that you must have the latest version of the Venmo app to access these features.
Also, the seller may choose to scan your in-store QR code. Select the “Show to Pay” tab from the in-app scanner to present your QR Code.
For this transaction, however, you can’t switch to a different payment method once the seller scans your code. On that note, just remember to change your default payment method to a different one before transacting.
Venmo uses your in-app balance first before other payment methods. So, if you have insufficient balance from your Venmo account, switch your payment method by selecting from your linked bank account or card.
Aside from scanning QR codes to pay, the mobile app offers Venmo cards as another payment option.

How to Pay With Venmo Cards In-store
Paying with Venmo Cards in-store has never been easier, and there are two ways to do it:
- POS terminals
- Contactless payment
1. POS Terminals
Like all debit and credit cards, use your Venmo Cards to pay in-store by inserting your card into POS terminals and confirming your purchase.
For your Venmo Debit, you would have to enter your PIN, then confirm the amount.
2. Contactless Payment
To pay with this method, tap your Venmo card at least two inches away on the store’s contactless-enabled terminals.
Wait for the payment confirmation, and after that, you’re all set to go!
What is a Venmo Card?
Venmo offers more ways to pay with your app funds with its Venmo Mastercard Debit Card and Venmo Visa Credit Card. You can easily make contactless payments in-store with Venmo cards, too!
On top of that, both card transactions will reflect on your app’s account so you can monitor your expenses in one place.
Below, we’ll go over the functions of each card.
1. Debit Card
Venmo’s Mastercard Debit Card is linked to your account and uses your Venmo balance to pay during check-out. It can be used to withdraw cash like any debit card, too.
If you’re running out of money from your Venmo balance, reload with your linked bank account, and your Debit Card will automatically be funded. With your Venmo Debit Card, you can get cash back from purchases at participating business retailers.
The debit card also comes with the contactless payment feature, which you’ll notice as the Wi-Fi symbol on your card.
2. Credit Card
The Venmo Visa Credit Card has perks as a card and an in-app payment method. The Venmo Credit Card is also integrated into the app, which you can use for paying your Venmo mates when splitting bills or transferring funds (with a standard 3% fee).
Venmo treats you with cashback on your three top spend categories, with 3% for your first most-spent, 2% for the second, and 1% for the rest of your credit card purchases.
Additionally, the Venmo Credit Card also supports contactless payment.
How to Add Money to Your Venmo Debit Card
With your linked bank account, reload your Debit by adding money to your Venmo account.
Here’s how to do it:
- Find the “Me” tab and select “Manage Balance.”
- Enter your desired amount, then press “Next.”
- Then, choose your linked bank account to transfer money and reload your Venmo balance.
- After that, a verification will show the amount of your money and its estimated arrival date.
- Finally, tap on “Add (with confirmed amount) now.”
It usually takes three to five business days for your money to be transferred to your balance. You may check your transfer status on the “Me” tab of your app.
Where Can You Use a Venmo Card?
Let’s have a look below at where you can and can’t use your Venmo cards.
1. Debit Card
The Venmo Debit Card can be used everywhere in the US and US territories where Mastercard is accepted. However, you can’t use your Venmo account and Debit Card with international merchants.
Feel free to use it elsewhere in the US, especially in Venmo-partnered retail and food businesses.
2. Credit Card
The Venmo Credit Card is welcomed wherever Visa credit cards are accepted, locally and internationally.
You can use it not only in online international purchases but also abroad when you’re traveling. The best part is that it doesn’t have foreign transaction fees!
Withdrawing With Venmo Debit Card
In case the store or merchant doesn’t have access to any of the payment methods, you can use your Venmo Debit Card to withdraw cash from ATMs. Simply look for Mastercard accepting ATMs.
Be careful, though. Withdrawing from most ATMs will cost you a $2.50 fee and a $3 fee for over-the-counter cash-out.
To withdraw from ATMs without extra fees, Venmo says you can withdraw cash using MoneyPass ATMs.
Summary
With the easy steps above, you now know how to pay with Venmo in-store. You can also use your Venmo Debit and Credit Card to pay in-store and online.
With contactless payments on the rise, Venmo steps up its game by integrating that into its cards. So if you’re on the go, simply tap to pay with your Venmo card wherever there are contactless-enabled terminals.
